Story Behind the Art: The Sarouk weaving tradition encompasses rugs produced in Arak, surrounding villages, and the Farahan plains of central Iran, an area long regarded for its exceptional weaving standards. During the 19th century, Sarouk rugs commonly featured dense allover patterns such as Herati and Gul Hennai designs, executed with fine asymmetric knotting on durable cotton foundations. Toward the late 1800s, influenced by the formal elegance of Tabriz carpets, Sarouk workshops shifted toward symmetrical compositions centered around ornate floral medallions. Following World War I, artisans introduced a defining evolution by replacing rigid medallions with gracefully dispersed floral sprays that float across the field. This open, balanced composition became the hallmark of Sarouk rugs, earning widespread acclaim. Today, Sarouk-inspired designs are woven beyond Iran in countries such as India, Pakistan, and Romania, continuing the legacy of this influential Persian style.
