Shirvan rugs originate from the Caucasus, a mountainous region in Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Turkey, and Russia. It lies between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. Traditional carpets with geometric patterns have been woven in the villages since the 18th century. The motifs are typical and vary regionally. Old and antique Shirvan carpets are often very valuable and highly priced, as they are sought after by collectors. Today, carpets with Shirvan motifs are only knotted in small quantities in Azerbaijan. Most Shirvan carpets today come from weaving workshops in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The quality of these carpets is generally good to very good. Local wool is used as the pile material, and the warp and weft threads are made of cotton, which gives the carpets a pleasant stability.
