Story Behind the Art: Kerman rugs take their name from the famed city in southeastern Iran, a powerhouse of workshop weaving since the Safavid period (1501–1732). Many exhibit floral or architectural borders framing a medallion field, while others explore Shah Abbasi medallion-and-corner formats, garden layouts, vases, tree-of-life and hunting scenes, or allover boteh and floral repeats—even stripes. The best-known Kerman types include the vase and boteh rugs, where vases or botehs are scattered across a field alive with blossoms and palmettes. Celebrated for exceptionally fine weave, delicate drawing, and an unmatched spectrum of colors, Kerman pieces can require more than a year to produce—often incorporating 15 to 30 distinct hues in a single rug.
