Press the upper button and the display pushes up the top row of lights which gently float back down just like a real graphic equalizer. 2 lights remain on for 5 seconds to indicate the time in hours and minutes. Press the upper button twice to skip the animation. When the time is displayed, press the upper button again to display the date. The date can be read in exactly the same way.
