According to tradition, the origins of the Rosary trace back to the 13th century when St. Dominic was visited by the Blessed Virgin Mary. During this apparition, she presented him with the Rosary, instructing him on the format of the prayers and charging him with spreading the devotion.

A few centuries later, Christendom faced an unprecedented crisis when the Islamic Ottoman Empire was poised to conquer western Europe. Recognizing our need for spiritual help, Pope St. Pius V called on all the faithful to pray the Rosary, asking Mary to intercede for victory in the approaching naval conflict. Though severely outnumbered, the Christian fleet won the battle, and Pope St. Pius V credited to victory to Mary, instituting the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (or Our Lady of Victory) in commemoration.

Though this simple devotion has developed over the centuries, one thing has remained the same: countless holy men and women—many of whom are canonized saints—have held a deep reverence for the practice of praying the Rosary, witnessing to its power in drawing us closer to Christ through His Blessed Mother.
